Internet vs. World Wide Web

When it comes to the Internet and the World Wide Web, many people tend to believe that these terms mean the same thing. This is false because the World Wide Web is a subset of the Internet. According to Page One Power, the World Wide Web is a common area for information exchange that is facilitated by the internet.  In other words, you connect to the internet to access the World Wide Web.

As you may know, one of the marvel’s of modern technology is the Internet. The internet is a big public network of networks. Think of it as a global computer where other computers can gain access and can physically interact with the system. The internet was originally invented for military purposes but was expanded for the purpose of communication by Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf.

While the Internet had roots of development in the 1960’s, the World Wide Web was first accessed in 1991 by Tim Berners- Lee. The Web makes use of hypertext to access information on multiple networks. We typically access the Web through browsers such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

According to history.com, the first website arrived on August 6, 1991. The site was about the World Wide Web and how to use it. It is still available to access.
